01 Why this matters

Why "translation accuracy" alone is not enough

For foreigners living in Japan, the real difficulty is not "the language barrier" itself. It is the moment when the words are translated, yet the meaning fails to land.

  • "My Number Card" gets rendered as "number card" and the city hall counter cannot understand
  • "I would like to be examined without a reservation" is rendered as "add to the reservation list," confusing the reception desk
  • A point made to a superior, translated literally, damages the working relationship
  • A description of symptoms told to a doctor is mistranslated, becoming the entrance to misdiagnosis

These are not problems of "translation accuracy."

It is a problem of translation that fails to land in the context of Japanese society.
Converting "word to word" and converting "from the situation a foreign resident is in, into something a Japanese person can receive naturally" are two different technologies.

EMYSTI LLC's TransHero (Hon-yaku-Taisho) is designed to focus on exactly this point. Through a 13-case empirical comparison with a generic translation service, this report shows how a "translation app" differs from "infrastructure for living in Japan."

The ASR of Generic Service A lacks training data for this code-switching pattern; we observed multiple cases of "My Number" being recognized as "number" and "zairyu" as "zai-ryu (re-stay)."

Hospitals, immigration offices, schools, housing, and business each have their own conventionalized formal expressions. Whether "jiahao (add a slot)" is translated as "consultation without reservation," and whether "zairyu koshin" is rendered as "Application for Extension of Period of Stay," is the boundary line between generic and domain-aware translation.

Observations

Three Critical Divergences

  1. Major drop in ASR accuracy: In our validation, the generic ASR exhibited reduced accuracy on the code-switching patterns (Chinese + Japanese + English) that are characteristic of foreign residents in Japan. Japanese technical terms such as "My Number" and "zairyu" failed to be extracted correctly in multiple cases.
  2. Formal institution names: "Immigration Bureau (Nyukoku Kanrikyoku)" was renamed in 2019 to "Immigration Services Agency / Bureau (Shutsunyukoku Zairyu Kanricho/kyoku)." The generic translation still uses the old name.
  3. Formal procedure names: The legal formal name for "residence renewal" is "Application for Extension of Period of Stay." Consistency with submitted documents is a precondition for the procedure.
Real-World Impact

What Happens at the Counter

If the output from Generic Service A were presented at the counter, the officer would likely interpret it as "a foreigner who wants to purchase items," and the procedure could not progress.

Residence-status renewal is a procedure with a statutory deadline. Inaccurate translation can cause delays and affect the continuity of residence status.

A child's fever is one of the most urgent situations a foreign-resident family can face. Japanese pediatric clinics largely operate by reservation, and the situation of requesting "jiahao (a same-day add-on slot)" arises often. Because conventional medical-system expressions differ between Chinese and Japanese, translation accuracy directly determines how quickly the consultation can begin.

Three Errors that Directly Affect Diagnosis

  1. Misread persistence: "Yin yin zuo tong" means a persistent dull pain, but the generic service rendered it as "occasionally hurts a little," flipping it to occasional. The nature of the symptom is inverted.
  2. "Shiku-shiku" choice: The standard Japanese mimetic word for dull and chronic pain in medical intake. TransHero selects it correctly.
  3. Lost intensity information: The generic service does not render "very unwell." The patient's subjective distress level is important diagnostic information.
Real-World Impact

Translation Quality Determines Medical Quality

A suspected chronic gastritis or reflux esophagitis, versus an occasional stomach discomfort, leads to very different initial diagnostic direction, prescription, and test prioritization.

Translation differences at this level can influence misdiagnosis and treatment-direction decisions. A textbook scene where translation quality bears on the quality of medical care.

Distance from a Native Japanese Writer's Register

  1. Misused "o-mochi-shimasu": "O-mochi-suru" is a humble form meaning "to present to (you)." It does not fit the context of a child bringing work to school. The correct form is "jisan itashimasu."
  2. Unneeded "today" duplication: Repeating the same expression within one sentence is a habit Japanese notice-writing avoids. TransHero distinguishes "honjitsu (today)" and "ashita (tomorrow)."
  3. Standard Sino-Japanese vocabulary: "Hatsunetsu (fever)," "kesseki (absence)," and "jisan (bring along)" are the standard Sino-Japanese terms in communication books. They match how Japanese parents write.

  1. Honorific choice: "Oya-san" is colloquial; "oya-sama" is the standard for written or formal communication.
  2. Conventional greeting: "Konnichiwa" is for face-to-face. In writing, "osewa ni natte orimasu" is the standard greeting in Japanese service communications.
  3. Conventional self-introduction: "5-go shitsu no mono desu" is the conventional Japanese form. "Watashi wa ... ni sundeimasu" is too explanatory.
  4. Tone of the request: "Shuri wo onegai suru koto wa kanou deshouka" leaves room for the other party's judgment. Softer than "shuri shite itadakenai deshouka."

Wording by Relationship

  1. Inappropriate form of address: "Bosu" is rarely used outside yakuza films or casual jokes. Japanese business convention uses the title (shacho, bucho, etc.).
  2. "Anata" is wrong here: Using "anata" toward a superior runs against Japanese business convention.
  3. Cushion phrasing: "...desu ga" is required as a preface to a pushback.
  4. Indirect expression: Rendering "hidoi (terrible)" as "muzukashii to omoimasu (I think it would be difficult)" is the protocol for directness within Japanese politeness.
  5. Question-form suggestion: "...dewa nai deshouka" turns criticism into a "consultation."
Real-World Impact

Impact on Workplace Trust

Using Generic Service A's output as-is — addressing a superior incorrectly and stating direct criticism — falls into serious taboo territory in Japanese business convention and can severely affect workplace trust.

Standard Chinese ASR is trained on the vocabulary of Mainland Standard Chinese. Foreign residents unconsciously speak by mixing Japanese terms — "My Number," "zairyu," "shiyakusho," "yoyaku" — directly into their Chinese.

TransHero's ASR is optimized for this code-switching pattern, accurately transcribing mixed-language utterances that generic ASR cannot recognize. This is the result of designing around the lived realities of foreign residents.

Voice Slicing × Multi-AI Coordination — Robust in Noise, Stable Over Time

TransHero's simultaneous-interpretation engine slices each utterance into millisecond-level voice fragments and runs a deliberative architecture: multiple specialized AIs operate in parallel — one for speech recognition (ASR), another for code-switching, another for scene-context inference, another for honorific-tier selection, another for translation — with their outputs voted on and reconciled.

This stack is the product of several years of patient build-up. We observed and interviewed in the field the situations foreign residents actually face, then systematically collected, surveyed, and organized the patterns of mistranslation and misrecognition that occur there, classifying the specialized vocabulary, conventional expressions, and honorific tiers of administration, healthcare, education, housing, and business. Licensed commercial foundation models sit at the base; on top of them we layer the field data we have gathered ourselves, then run each AI through dozens of fine-tuning iterations tuned for its specific scene. The voice-fragment deliberation scheme itself was refined by closing one real-world failure at a time.

What we have assembled is a stack of our own design — and it is what makes the two capabilities the field demands, noise resistance and long-context retention, hold up at the same time.

Noise Resistance — Holds Up in Hospital and City-Hall Environments
Multiple AIs vote on and reconcile the recognition output of each slice. The result: stable transcription even amid the environmental sounds — paging announcements, voices from the next counter, coughing, paper rustling — that a single model would miss or misrecognize. Many of the generic-ASR errors observed in our empirical validation (e.g., "My Number" → "number") are avoided by this deliberative approach.
Long context
Long-Context Retention — Translations Stay Consistent as the Conversation Builds
While translating slice by slice in real time, a separate AI continuously tracks the session's overall context — opening framing, proper nouns, honorific relationships, scene tag. As a result, even in a long simultaneous-interpretation session, "the names and procedure terms introduced early on" do not drift later. Consultations, interviews, business negotiations — anywhere context accumulation drives the outcome — are where this design shows its edge.

A deliberative structure where voice fragments are voted on and reconciled by multiple specialized AIs. Licensed commercial foundation models sit at the base; on top of them, field data we have observed and collected ourselves, specific to the lives of foreign residents in Japan, drives continuous retraining and retuning. The result is a stack of our own design — engineered by closing real-world failure patterns one at a time, the patterns that generic translation handles worst: real-world noise and long-form context.

Feature 04 — Language Coverage

Four Languages, Two-Way — A Selection Matched to Resident Demographics

The supported language pairs are "Japanese ⇄ Chinese, English, Vietnamese." Unlike generic translation services that handle over 100 languages worldwide, TransHero is designed to focus on the top demographics of foreign residents in Japan.

Vietnamese in particular accounts for the third-largest foreign-resident population in Japan (about 600,000) yet remains an area where generic-translation quality is markedly lower than for other languages.

TransHero incorporates culturally embedded expressions such as Vietnamese-specific honorific rules (self-reference Em / male Ông / female Bà).

With these limits in mind, what this report shows is the fact that a clear divergence exists between generic and domain-aware translation in specific everyday scenes. That divergence is a structural fork driven by product design rooted in foreign residents' lived realities — not a surface-level contest of word choices.

Translation Determines the Quality of a Society

Every one of the 13 cases in this report is a scene that actually occurs in the daily life of foreign residents. The "translation failures" in these scenes are not problems of technical accuracy — each one produces a concrete consequence.

  • When a doctor misreads a patient's symptoms, the diagnosis goes wrong.
  • When an immigration officer misreads the intent of a procedure, the paperwork stops.
  • When a supervisor misreads a subordinate's intent, the relationship breaks.
  • When a parent misreads a school notice, the child is left behind.
  • When a landlord misreads a tenant's request, the quality of housing deteriorates.

All of these are outcomes determined by the "quality of translation". Generic translation is not enough to support these scenes. Translation that lands in the context of Japanese society — that is at once a technical and a societal question.
